Zachary had a successful Glenn procedure.
--Medical Update --Zachary has a bilateral superior vena canva instead of the typical single SVC. This allowed the docs to forgo the usual heart, lung bypass machine. (This is great news as there are always complications from using the heart/lung machine.) The docs moved the left SVC to his left PA and then did his right SVC to his right PA. The entire operation took 5 hours, which is about an hour less than the expected time frame.
The docs left him on the vent (intubated) to allow Zach to slowly progress off the sedation meds. He was extubated around 11pm last night.
The docs discussed with us that typically 8 hours after surgery, patients can take several steps backwards. They don't really know a cause, but with this knowledge, they can help prevent a major incident by being prepared. They wanted Zach off the vent (extubated) prior to the 8 hour mark because the vent causes the lungs to be consistently full of air also called positive pressure.
They also watched his pressures in his pulmonary arteries, superior vena cavas and overall blood pressure. So far all of his pressures look good. They are going to start weaning several medals that he was given during surgery (epinephrine and Dex).
After the his first heart surgery back in February, Zach required CPR around the eight hour mark after surgery. So we were very thankful that we did NOT get a call from the hospital saying they had a situation.
It is hard to leave Zachary in the hospital and go home, but Becky and I talked about it and we feel that we can more successfully advocate for his needs if we get the rest we need. We also know that, no matter what, God will execute his plan for Zachary.
Thanks for praying!
Zach and mom this morning.
God surely has something special in mind for this poor little punkin!
